National Day Of Malaysia

31st August 2009 marks another national's history as it is 52nd independence day of our beloved country. Hari Merdeka (Independence Day) is a national day of Malaysia commemorating the independence of the Federation of Malaya from British colonial rule, celebrated on August 31. In a nut shell, it is to celebrate the formation of Malaysia.

This is a brief history of the making of Malaysia as you know today.

The effort for independence was spearheaded by Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, who led a delegation of ministers and political leaders of Malaya in negotiations with the British in London for Merdeka, or independence along with the first president of the Malayan Chinese Association (MCA) Tun Dato Sir Tan Cheng Lock and fifth President of Malaysian Indian Congress Tun V.T. Sambanthan. Once it became increasingly clear that the Communist threat posed during the Malayan Emergency was petering out, agreement was reached on February 8, 1956, for Malaya to gain independence from the British Empire. However, for a number of logistical and administrative reasons, it was decided that the official proclamation of independence would only be made the next year, on August 31, 1957, at Stadium Merdeka (Independence Stadium), in Kuala Lumpur.

Do you know, what flag is this?

It was the flag of Federated Malay State before the declaration on independence. This flag was used from year 1895 - 1946. Now, we are proud to be standing tall under our very own Jalur Gemilang.

From all of SKBPS English Teachers, we wish you Happy Merdeka Day.

Internet Jargon

Sometimes we did find words that we know, but did not really know what they mean. And often, we did not bother to look up for what they means! Like "jargon" for instance, how many of Malay speaking students and teachers know the meaning. Well, look it up for yourself! Use online dictionary like www.dictionary.com or http://ninjaword.com for faster result.

Here are some internet jargon that we often see or read but didn't really know what the mean.

Broadband : A widerange of frequencies that are available to transmit data. This is an anology. Picture it as a highway. For a one-lane highway ( dial-up connection aka narrowband ), only one car can travel at a time. With broadband, you can have a highway with 6 or 8 lanes, allowing more traffic to pass at the same time. No congestion!

Bandwidth : The capacity of your internet connection to send and receive data. Imagine your internet connection as a pipe ( another analogy ) - the bigger the pipe, the faster the data will flow. To check your bandwidth, contact your internet provider.

Mbps : Mbps stands for Megabits per second. A unit of data transfer rate equal to 1.000,000 bits per second, used to measure bandwidth. The higher the number, the faster the data is sent or received.

HSDPA : You always find this abbreviation for High Speed Downlink Packet Access. Its the third generation in the High Speed Packet Access family. It allows networks to have higher data transfer speeds and capacity.

USB : Is Universal Serial Bus modem, a device that connects you to the internet without the need of a network cable of phone line. Fits into the the standard USB port found on most laptops. When establishing connection, your USB modem auto-selects the fastest available service i.e. HSPDA ( 3G ) or GPRS.

So, after knowing all these jargon, hopefully will never heard again of this sentence "Hey, did you bring your broadband today?"...

Cyber Info : Online Storage

“Online Storage”

1. What is online storage?

A file hosting service, online file storage service, or online media center is an
Internet hosting service specifically designed to host static content, typically large files that are not web pages. Typically they allow web and FTP access. They can be optimized for serving many users (as is implied by the term "hosting") or be optimized for single-user storage (as is implied by the term "storage"). Related services are video sharing, virtual storage and remote backup. You can upload file from 1 byte up to 5 gigabytes to unlimited storage (depend on your chosen provider).

2. Why online storage is better than saving data in pen drives?

When some time you forget your pen drives or you external hard disk or even your laptop and you are a long, long way from home and you really need those documents, this is where online sharing comes handy. You can download those files anywhere as long as internet connection is available. You can also share your files with other people. Just let them know where you store your files and they can download those files anywhere on earth!

3. There are many notable online sharing or hosting for free.
www.mozy.com, www.fileqube.com, www.badongo.com, www.dropbox.com and many more. But one of my favourite is www.4shared.com. To upload your files to this website, you have to create your account. No personal detail needed here, just your valid e-mail address and password. And you can start from there.

4. For more tutorials, go to this website
http://www.4shared.com/tutorial/ or video tutorial at www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFqpGXmtsKg. It will guide you step by step from creating your account to uploading your files and documents.

5. For materials from the Panitia, you can simply download the materials i.e. Bulletins, Yearly Scheme of Work etc. at
http://englishpanitia.blogspot.com. The Panitia used the online storing to store and share the bulletins online.
